How to print a Google Slides poster at home
I designed a conference poster in Google Slides last month, mostly because my co-presenter needed to edit it from her laptop the night before while I was on a plane, and Slides makes that trivial. What it doesn't make trivial is turning that slide into an actual 24 × 36 inch poster. There's no "poster mode," no big-format export, no button anywhere that says print large. The real workaround is three moves: set the slide to your poster's true proportions before you design a single thing, export it as a PDF instead of an image, then tile that PDF across ordinary Letter paper at home. Here's the exact sequence, including the one setting that quietly wrecks the whole thing if you skip it.
Why Slides fights you on this
A default Google Slides file is either 10 × 7.5 in (Standard) or 13.33 × 7.5 in (Widescreen) — both are screen proportions, not poster proportions. Hit File → Print and Slides just opens your browser's print dialog sized to whatever the slide already is, so you get a tiny presentation slide on one sheet of paper, not a poster. The File → Download menu is where the actual options live: PowerPoint, PDF, plain text, a zipped webpage, or an image of the current slide (PNG, JPG, or SVG). Of those, only two matter for a poster: Page setup, which controls the shape you're designing at, and PDF, which is the export that survives being blown up to poster size.
Step 1 — Set the size first (File → Page setup → Custom)
Do this before you place a single text box or shape. Open File → Page setup, and in the dropdown that defaults to "Standard 4:3" or "Widescreen 16:9," choose Custom. A small dialog appears with two number fields and a unit dropdown — Slides remembers whatever unit you used last, so check that it actually says Inches and not centimeters or points before you type anything. Then enter your poster's real width and height, for example 18 × 24.
This matters more than it looks like it should. Everything you draw in Slides — text boxes, shapes, lines, the stroke width on a border — is a vector, sized proportionally to the page. Design at 10 × 7.5 and then try to stretch it to 24 × 36 afterward, and your margins, font sizes, and spacing all come out wrong relative to each other. Design at the final aspect ratio from the start, and what you see on screen is what prints, just larger.
One real limitation: Google Slides' custom page size does cap out before you reach mural-sized dimensions. If you type in your actual target size and it won't accept it, don't fight it — set the page to the correct aspect ratio at whatever scale Slides will allow instead. That's 3:4 for an 18 × 24 poster, 2:3 for 24 × 36, or 1:1 for a square. Design normally at that ratio, then set the real print size later, inside the splitter. This works because a PDF's text and vector shapes are resolution-independent — a text box or a rectangle you drew in Slides stays perfectly crisp no matter how much larger the exported PDF gets scaled. The only thing with a real ceiling is a photo you dropped in, which is limited by its own pixel count no matter what page size you chose.
Step 2 — Export as a PDF (File → Download → PDF document)
Go to File → Download → PDF document (.pdf) and save it somewhere you'll find it. Skip the PNG and JPG options in that same menu — they only export the current slide as a flat image, rasterized to whatever resolution ties to your screen and slide size, which is nowhere near what a 24-inch-wide print needs. A PDF is different: the text and vector shapes stay sharp at any size because they're not made of pixels in the first place. If your slide has embedded photos, those are the one part of the PDF still limited by their original pixel count — everything else Slides drew is effectively infinite resolution.
Step 3 — Split it into printable pages
Open Free Image Splitter and drop your PDF onto the page — it reads PDFs directly, no image conversion step needed. Set a target print width (say, 24 in) or a number of pages across, and watch the DPI readout before you print anything: green (200+) is sharp up close, amber (100–199) reads fine from a few feet away, red (under 100) will look visibly blocky. Because Slides text and vector shapes are sharp at any size, most Slides posters come out reading green across the whole page. If you see a lower number, it's almost always one specific embedded photo dragging the readout down, not the design itself — the tool flags exactly which page it's on so you know what to fix before you spend paper on it.
Step 4 — Print at 100% and assemble
In the print dialog, set scaling to Actual size or 100% — never "Fit to page," which is often the default and will shrink every tile by a few percent so nothing lines up at the seams. Print one page first, measure it with a ruler, and only run the full set once that page checks out. Poster sizes and how many pages they take
The aspect ratio is what you set in Page setup; the page count is roughly what you'll get tiling on Letter paper with a small margin. Actual counts shift a little depending on orientation and overlap, but this gets you in the right neighborhood before you start.

When something looks off
The text looks soft or fuzzy once printed
Two usual causes. Either you designed at the default 10 × 7.5 slide size and stretched the poster afterward, which throws off the proportions between text, margins, and shapes — go back, set the real aspect ratio in Page setup, and rebuild the layout at that shape. Or you downloaded as PNG or JPG instead of PDF, which rasterizes the whole slide at screen resolution before you ever get to the splitter. Re-download as a PDF and re-split; text and vector shapes should come back sharp.
One photo in the poster looks blocky, but the text around it is fine
That's expected, and it's a source problem, not a printing problem. Text, shapes, and lines you drew in Slides are vectors with no resolution limit. A photo you dropped in is a fixed grid of pixels, and if it was small on screen it stays small at poster size. Swap that image for a higher-resolution version, or run it through the splitter's upscaler before re-inserting it into the slide, and re-export.
The pages don't line up once they're taped together
Almost always a scaling issue in the print dialog. "Fit to page" is the usual default, and it shrinks every tile by a few percent so the seams no longer meet. Reprint with scaling set to Actual size or 100%, and check by measuring one printed page against a ruler before you commit the whole set.
