How to print a research poster at home
My office mate had a 48 × 36 in poster due for a conference in two days, and the campus print shop's quote was $85 with a 24-hour minimum — plus they'd be closed the day before her flight. We split her PowerPoint slide into 24 Letter pages instead, taped it together on the kitchen table that evening, and had it standing on a foam board core before the print shop would have even opened. It held up fine under the poster-hall lights; nobody guessed it wasn't a single sheet. Total cost: about six dollars in paper and ink. Here's the exact process, including where a home-tiled poster is the wrong call.
The honest tradeoff
Standard research posters run 48 × 36 in or 42 × 36 in landscape — a few fields still use 36 × 24. Whatever your advisor or template specifies, that's the number your conference's easels and poster boards are built around, so don't guess at it. FedEx Office, campus print centers, and most on-site conference printers charge $50 to $120 or more for that size on a large-format plotter, and they usually want the file the day before, sometimes two. If your poster is finished the night before your flight, that lead time alone can decide things for you.
Printing at home on Letter paper runs $5 to $8 in paper and ink across roughly 20 to 30 sheets, and it's ready the moment your printer is done. The honest part: a home-tiled poster has visible seams up close. Assembled carefully — trimmed straight, taped from behind, mounted flat — nobody notices from the normal distance people actually read a poster from, which is a few feet, not a few inches. What you're giving up is the single unbroken fabric or photo-paper print some fields expect for close inspection. If your department is one of those, or you're presenting to a small formal jury standing inches from the paper, pay the shop. For the far more common case — a crowded poster hall where people scan titles from six feet before deciding whether to stop — tiling is the right call.
The workflow, start to finish
1. Set the slide size before you design anything
Open PowerPoint and go to Design → Slide Size → Custom Slide Size — not the Standard (4:3) or Widescreen (16:9) presets in that same dropdown. Enter your poster's real dimensions: 48 in wide by 36 in tall, landscape, is the most common ask. PowerPoint's slide size maximum is 56 inches per side, so anything up to a 56 × 56 in poster fits inside a single slide.
Do this before you place a single text box. A new PowerPoint file defaults to 13.33 × 7.5 in — the widescreen ratio — and if you build the whole poster there and resize afterward, PowerPoint asks whether to Maximize or Ensure Fit, then stretches every text box, chart, and image to the new proportions. Titles land at odd sizes, columns overlap, and figures you carefully aligned drift out of place. Setting 48 × 36 in first means every font size and image placement you choose is the real, final size — what you see while designing is exactly what prints.
2. Export as a PDF, not an image
Once the poster's built, use File → Export → Create PDF/XPS Document (or Save As and pick PDF from the format list — same result). PDF is the right call here: your title, body text, axis labels, and any charts built natively in PowerPoint stay vector, so they print sharp no matter how wide you go. Export a PNG instead and you're locked into whatever pixel resolution PowerPoint renders at by default — which is well under what a 48-inch-wide print needs, and there's no reliable way to raise it from the standard export dialog. Skip the PNG route for anything this size.
3. Split the PDF and check what actually needs fixing
Drop the PDF into Free Image Splitter and set the target width to 48 in (or whatever your poster's width is). Because the PDF holds real vector text and shapes, your headline, body copy, and any native PowerPoint charts stay crisp at any print size — text doesn't have a DPI to worry about. What does have a DPI is anything that started life as a photo: a results image, a scanned figure, a chart pasted in as a picture from another program. The tool's DPI readout is really checking those, and it'll flag any embedded image too low-res to hold up at full size before you print a single page. If something reads amber or red, go back to the source for a higher-resolution export rather than trying to fix it after printing.
How many pages you'll actually print
Divide your poster's width and height by a Letter sheet's usable area — about 8 × 10.5 in once you allow for margins — and round up each side. That's the whole calculation:

Add a 0.25 in overlap in the splitter and it prints a cut line on the repeated strip at every seam — that's what keeps a slightly crooked trim from slicing through a headline or a bar chart instead of landing in blank margin. It's a small setting that saves you from reprinting a page the night before your talk.
Print, trim, and get it standing on the easel
Print at Actual size or 100% — check this explicitly, since "Fit to page" is often the print dialog's default and it shrinks every page by a few percent, enough that nothing lines up afterward. Print one page first, measure it against a ruler, then run the rest.
Assembly follows the same trim-interior-edges, tape-from-behind method as any tiled print: cut only where pages overlap, run one long strip of tape down the back of each seam, and keep the outer margins on until the whole poster's joined. For a research poster specifically, don't skip mounting it. Most poster sessions expect the thing to stand upright on an easel or lean against a board for two or three hours straight, and loose taped paper won't hold that shape under handling and air conditioning drafts. A 48 × 36 in foam board runs $8 to $15 at any craft or office supply store. Mount the assembled poster to it with spray adhesive or a glue stick worked into the overlap strips, press it flat with a ruler edge from the center out, and it'll hold its shape through the whole session.
One more thing worth getting right: skip glossy paper if you can. Conference rooms are usually lit with a wall of fluorescents or downlights, and glossy stock throws that straight back at anyone standing at an angle to your poster. When a poster print goes wrong
The figures look blocky, even though the text is sharp
This is almost always an embedded photo, not the print job. Native PowerPoint text and shapes are vector and print sharp at any size; a results photo, scanned figure, or screenshot pasted into the slide is fixed-resolution pixels, and blowing it up to poster width is exactly what makes it blocky. The DPI readout in the splitter will have flagged that specific tile in amber or red before you printed. Go back to your original data or imaging software for a higher-resolution export and re-place it, or — if a rebuild isn't practical this close to the deadline — accept that one figure will read soft up close and looks fine from normal poster-session distance.
Text looks soft even though it's plain PowerPoint text
Usually means the poster was designed at the default 13.33 × 7.5 in slide size and scaled up afterward rather than built at final size from the start. Scaling up doesn't touch resolution the way it does with a photo, but it does stretch line weights and can trigger font substitution or hinting issues at extreme scale. The fix is to rebuild at the real poster dimensions (Design → Slide Size → Custom Slide Size) rather than resizing after the fact — it takes less time than it sounds like, since your text and layout choices carry over, they just need reflowing at true size.
The pages don't line up at the seams
Check the print dialog's scaling setting before anything else — "Fit to page" is the usual culprit and it silently shrinks every tile by a few percent, which is invisible on one page but opens a visible gap once you've joined six or eight of them. Set scale to Actual size / 100%, reprint just the affected pages, and measure one against a page you know printed correctly. If you used the 0.25 in overlap setting, small errors get absorbed into the repeated strip; without it, even a 2% shrink shows up as a white line at every seam.
