How to print a 24×36 poster at home

I wanted a 24×36 poster — the standard movie one-sheet and US poster size — for the empty wall behind my desk, and I wasn't paying a print shop $30 for something I could make myself. My inkjet only takes Letter paper. Twelve pages, a ruler, a blade, and about fifteen minutes later, it was hanging. Here's the exact page math, the resolution you actually need, and the one print-dialog setting that ruins everything if you skip it.

The math: fitting 24×36 onto Letter paper

Letter paper is 8.5 × 11 in. Most home inkjets can't print all the way to the edge, so budget a 0.25 in margin on all four sides — that leaves a usable area of about 8 × 10.5 in per sheet. Divide the poster by that and the grid falls out on its own:

3 × 4 = 12 Letter pages, arranged three across and four down in portrait orientation.

Four rows at 10.5 in each covers 42 in — six inches more than the 36 in you actually need. That's normal, not a mistake: it just means the bottom row only has to contribute its first 4.5 in (36 − 31.5) of image before you hit the target height, and the rest gets trimmed off before you tape it up. The 0.25 in overlap I'd recommend for any tiled print (more on why below) eats into that same slack rather than adding a page — with six inches of room to spare in the last row, there's no risk of it tipping the grid to five rows here. On a tighter size, where the division comes out close to a whole number, overlap can push a row or column over the edge and add a page. Worth a glance at the page count in the preview after you turn it on.

You can also lay the pages out in landscape instead of portrait. Letter rotated is 11 × 8.5 in, or roughly 10.5 × 8 in usable. Run the same division: 24 in ÷ 10.5 in = 3 across, 36 in ÷ 8 in = 4.5 → 5 rows, for 15 pages. Portrait wins by three pages and three fewer seams, so unless you have a specific reason to rotate, stick with portrait.

How much resolution do you actually need

Effective DPI is just the source image's pixel width divided by the printed width in inches. At 24 in wide, here's what that looks like for common source sizes:

For a 24×36 poster that holds up under close inspection, aim for roughly 4800 × 7200 px — the height needs the same 200 DPI treatment as the width, and 36 in × 200 DPI = 7200 px tall. If it's hanging where people actually view it, a few feet back, which is most posters, 3600 × 5400 px still looks good. Below about 2400 px wide, you're solidly into blocky territory at this size — either print smaller or fix the source first.

One thing worth knowing plainly: the splitter never downsamples. If your file only supplies 100 DPI at 24 in, that's exactly what prints — nothing quietly softens it for you. The live DPI dot in the workspace tells you before you've spent any ink. If you're short, run the image through the site's upscaler first, or drop the target width until the dot goes green or a comfortable amber.

Step by step

1. Set the grid for 24×36

2. Check the DPI dot before you print anything

The readout above the tiles reports page count, assembled size, and effective DPI. Green or a comfortable amber, keep going. Red, either upscale the source or reduce the target size — printing anyway just means a blockier poster, since the tool can't produce pixels that aren't in the file.

3. Set margin and overlap

Leave the margin at 0.25 in unless your printer does borderless. Turn on 0.25 in of overlap with cut-line guides — each page repeats a strip from its neighbor, so a slightly crooked cut lands inside the overlap instead of opening a gap at the seam.

4. Export and print at 100%

Export the multi-page PDF. In the print dialog, set scaling to Actual size / 100% — not Fit to page, which is often the default and will shrink every tile just enough that nothing lines up afterward. Print one test page, measure it against a ruler, and only then run the other eleven.

Assembly, briefly

Trim only the interior edges — the seams where two pages meet — and leave the outer margins on until the whole poster is assembled; they protect the corners while you're handling loose sheets. Tape from behind in one long strip per seam rather than the front, where tape catches light at every angle. If it's staying on the wall past a party, mount it on a $2–4 sheet of foam board from a craft store; it also kills the slight curl printer paper always has. What it costs

Twelve pages at roughly $0.10–0.25 each in paper and ink — plain Letter paper plus a typical inkjet's per-page cost — puts a 24×36 poster at about $1.20–3.00 all-in. A print shop's quote for the same size usually runs $15–40. The shop wins if you want a single glossy photographic sheet to frame as a gift; for a movie-poster reproduction, a dorm-room print, or anything you might swap out in a year, tiling wins by an order of magnitude.

When something goes wrong

The seams don't line up

Almost always a scaling issue — "Fit to page" in the print dialog, or a printer-driver setting like "shrink to printable area," resized the tiles by a few percent. Set scale to Actual size / 100%, reprint the affected pages, and measure one against a page you know is correct. If you printed with the 0.25 in overlap on, small errors get absorbed into it; without overlap, even a 2% shrink opens a visible gap at every seam.

The print looks blocky

That's a source-resolution problem, not a printing one — the DPI dot flagged it in amber or red before you printed, and the splitter doesn't invent detail that isn't in the file. Print smaller, view it from a bit further back (150 DPI looks fine from across a room), or run the source through the upscaler and re-split.

Which paper should I use

Plain paper is fine and cheapest. Matte photo paper handles color and detail noticeably better for a similar price to glossy, without the glare glossy throws under overhead lighting — glossy also shows fingerprints and tape marks more readily.
